TV: Burn Notice, Hexfix93′s take.

TV is kind of in the pits. Reality TV kind of dominates the air waves. I have recently discovered that original actor based TV is popping up again on the cable and satellite stations. One that caught my eyes was Burn Notice. I started watching it because yes, I am a Bruce Campbell(EVIL DEAD) fan. In this tv show he plays and ex military guy who befriends a US spy who gets black listed. The show revolves around 3 characters Michael Weston(spy), Sam Axe(his buddy), and Fiona Glenanne(gf).

The story pits Michael against the people who burned him and got him black listed, this is the main story that runs in the background of most of the episodes. He take on odd jobs for people to get by as he cannot get any work. He helps the helpless usually and all kinds of stories aries. The acting is pretty good actually, I was surprised. By no means is this like my favorite TV show, but I do watch it. Lots of action and explosions, cool narrative spoken by the main actor, and interesting characters. A lot of guest actors show up, usually from other sci-fi shows on syfy channel. If you are bored and need something new to watch, check this out, you might like it.

The Best LP, Movie, TV of 2009

LP of the year:

Rome: Flowers from Exile. I have listened to a lot of records this year. This is the one I go back to over and over. I know this will not be everyone’s cup of tea. This is a gothic folk lp. Take the swans and cross it with death in june and you have ROME. I love music like this. It has passion, intelligent and pretty lyrics. Emotion on more of an adult level. The sound is amazing, great acoustic guitars, pianos, drums, bass. Vocals are deep, dark and mesmerizing. Click here to read my full review. Runner up. Movie of the year:

Yes, District 9 Won me over. Simple, independent film. Great special fx, good story, good acting, great characters. This is probably my favorite sci fi movie of all time now. Yes, beating out aliens, and the original terminator and blade runner. For some reason I just loved the social commentary this film had. Best TV show:

TV: Warehouse 13 season 1, Hexfix93′s take.

I am really happy about TV again. With heros(which I am bored with now), and all these new syfy TV shows, I am really happy even though star trek is not on the air with new content anymore. Yes, I am a bit of a sci-fi nerd for sure. I missed the X-files form back in the day as well, and in my last TV review I feel that Fringe really covers that ground nicely. Warehouse 13 has a skully and moulder tandem thing going on as well and it works so far.

I love the main story of the series. Yes, it is about mystical objects, and warehouse 13 is run by some elite underground government agency that is high up in the ranks. Agents Peter Lattimer and Myka Bering run around the world collecting strange objets that cause strange things, and anything you can imagine starts happening. I am really impressed with the acting, and story telling in this series. I thought I would hate it, but the syfy channel is really coming up with brilliant stuff these days. Despite star gate atlantis being canceled (who cares stargate universe is here now!)

Imagine raiders of the lost ark meets Xfiles. The special fx are decent, and there is a good budget for this. Nothing looks lame, the warehouse where they store everything is really cool. I also really liked the other main character in the show Arthur “Artie” Nielsen who plays the boss of the two agents and the main manager of the warehouse. I also really liked the red head side kick Claudia Donovan, and the inn keeper Leena. Also Mrs. Irene Frederic played by C. C. H. Pounder who was on that fx show the shield(which i loved) with Michael Chiklis. Great acting and story telling. My favorite episode is “Implosion” where one of Artie’s old friend comes back into play as an enemy using imploding devices. I love the weird gadgets! I give this a 4 out of 5. TV: Fringe: Season 1, Hexfix93′s take.

I had heard things about this show, one of my friends told me to check it out, so I did. I really was missing all the great shows in the 90s, like x-files before it got stupid. This show really brings that scifi edge, with a conspiracy theory angle to the edge. I really love the characters.

The story is pretty good, It’s about the fbi investigating some weird viral and chemical attack on a plane in the first episode. Really creepy opening scene, I love how the assistant pilots jaw extends, when you see it, you will know what I am talking about. Any how, they start a special investigation unit after this case, by finding an old government military scientist who ends up in a mental hospital for 17 years into the fold with his misfit son as his baby sitter.

WOW, so many references to drugs, and nods to some old great movies. After how much I loved the last star trek movie from J.J. Abrams, I found out that he is a big part of fringe and that was one of the reasons I checked this out. I really love this show. I love how weird and strange some of the episodes are. It is brutal. People die, really messed up stuff happens. the mysterious big technology firm, the corruption in the government, a lot of cat and mouse and story twists.

The acting is pretty good, especially the the insane doctor. Buy it, watch it on TV, do whatever. If you like scifi and horror mixed with conspiracy theories and out of this world weird science, I highly recommend This TV show. I like it more than most movies these days. You must support stuff like this so they air more content like this, so please tune in and buy the dvds. I give this a 5 out of 5. Click here to buy the DVDs. Click here to buy the blueray.

Movies: Blood the last Vampire: Live Action film, Hexfix93′s Take.

I really liked the short anime film that this movie was based off of. They did take liberties with the story, I never read the real manga, so I have no idea. This movie is watchable. I was entertained. The swordplay was ok but not great, the special fx were kind of corny. The acting was pretty B movie grade. Never the less, I still like watching films like this, vampires, martial arts, blood.

The story focuses on Saya, a vampire hunter who is hired by the US government to investigate a high school on an American military base in Japan after ww2. Some typical kung fu slasher stuff. Kind of lacking in imagination, and they did not develop the story well enough. There are some really bad lines in some of the parts especially from the school kids and Saya. My favorite scene is when Saya rescues the other main female in the story and she is fighting endlessly, and you can really see how bad some of the edits are and how she obviously misses but blood starts flying everywhere any way. LOL

I really didn’t like the Computer Generated blood fx. It looked really fake and over the top. By no means is this movie perfect. I say rent this if you are a die hard vampire film freak. I preferred the anime version of this story absolutely, even though it was shorter. I give it a 2.8 out of 5. Click here to buy the dvd. Click here to buy the blueray.

I am pretty picky when it comes to horror films. That being said, I will not hide my love for Sam Raimi’s films. Seriously, Evil Dead 2 is probably my 2nd favorite horror film of all time. He also made the spider man movies which I thought were ok. But this film really did take me back to the 80s a bit. It feels modern but it has that visceral in your face super active and animated over the top violent spooky stuff that I loved about some of his previous films.

Here he returns to his horror roots. I thought I was going to hate this film. NOT. This movie has some great horror scenes. It seriously made me jump in a few parts, and I do not rattle easily. My favorite scene in the movie involves someone puking bugs all over someone’s face

Hi I’m a MAC, LOL. Justin Long from the MAC commercials is in this, and he is not that bad of an actor, kind of Keanu Reeves but smarter and with more character, Alison Lohman plays the main character and she really surprise me actually. Only Dario Argento uses the cameras as creatively as Sam Raimi. Cool camera angles, great scene shooting. Really creative. The story is ok, kind of your standard short story fare. I immediately though of tales from the krypt or shows like that.

What really sold me on this were the horror scenes, when she is being haunted. The goo. The gross. Nothing super gory, but just kind of EWWW. I will remember a few scenes from this film for some time. I cannot say that about most of the horror films I have watched over the last 10 years. I did like some of the story twists although it will be kind of obvious to some, still really enjoyed how the movie ends. I give this a 4 out of 5. Click here to buy dvd. Click here to buy Bluray.
